This infographic explores the myth and symbolism behind dragons, with the title inspired by the historical phrase “Here Be Dragons” and its connection to the human fascination with the unknown and the mysterious. Divided into three visually distinct sections—Types of Dragons, Dragons Across Cultures, and A Timeline of Dragons in Media—the piece offers an engaging, easy-to-navigate journey through both the lore and modern interpretations of these creatures from mythology.
All illustrations were hand-drawn in Procreate, allowing for a unique and detailed representation of each dragon and concept. The process gave me full control over the style and aesthetic, ensuring each element was crafted with precision and creativity. This hands-on approach adds a personal and artistic touch, enhancing the overall visual impact of the infographic.
The branded box goes along with the infographic and follows the "Here Be Dragons" brand. The style of this branded box is a collector's box to be sold in retail spaces such as fantasy event craft booths, bookstores, and crafting e-commerce sites such as Etsy. The box is complete with a scroll outlining its contents, a set of dragon cards, magical dragon-inspired glitter, and five miniature dragon figurines.
The top of the box was designed using Procreate and Adobe Illustrator, and then exported to be cut out on vinyl using a Cricut. A holographic vinyl was chosen in order to embody the magical aspect of dragons and thus match the aesthetic of the infographic poster.
The inside of the box features an introduction explaining the meaning of "Here Be Dragons". This is to explain to the buyer the concept of the box, and also setting the tone for the reveal as it is the first component they see.
The inside of the box is filled with crinkle cut paper and holographic tinsel. These materials were chosen in order to mimic a dragon's nest, further emphasizing the fantasy theme of the box. The holographic tinsel also matches with the holographic vinyl on the top of the box.
For the reveal of the box’s contents, everything is arranged thoughtfully to fit perfectly inside. The cards are fanned out, allowing most of them to be seen at a glance, while the glitters are placed in the corner to accommodate their taller shape. The scroll is positioned at the front, making it the first item people see and open to reveal the list of contents inside.
The scroll provides a list of contents, giving the buyer an overview of what’s inside the box. The act of unrolling it adds an interactive element, immersing them in the fantasy world. The beige color was chosen to replicate the look of a traditional scroll, enhancing the overall experience.
Miniature dragon figurines were selected instead of a single larger dragon figure to introduce variety into the box. The collection of smaller dragons aligns with the infographic, which details the different types of dragons. Including figurines such as a sea dragon, an Eastern dragon, and others helps to reinforce the infographic's content and provides a more accurate representation of each type.
The illustrations of the dragons were taken directly from the infographic in order to reinforce the brand and keep a consistent theme. The cards are complete with a matching back design, and various dragon facts and illustrations on the inside of the card.
The vials of glitter were included to enhance the fantasy aesthetic, with the sparkling glitter representing the magic theme of the box. The beige tags complement the corks on the bottles and tie into the overall design, connecting them to the scroll's theme.
