This work won 3rd Place in the 13th Annual Banned Book Jacket Design Competition.
This is a book jacket designed for Malcolm Lowry's novel Under the Volcano, published in 1947. The novel is set in the Mexican city of Quanhnahuac during Day of the Dead in November of 1938 and tells the story of Geoffrey Firmin, a British consul with alcoholism, as he tries to repair his life and his relationship with his wife.
The design of the book jacket incorporates significant symbols from the story, such as broken hearts or bottles of alcohol cut into the papel picado, which drape across the cover. The title of the book is punched into the colorful papers as well.  Necessary care and detail was given to the type hierarchy and layout of the cover in order to ensure legibility as well as maintaining the cover's aesthetic and unique quality with a nod to Mexican culture.
